History

La Morera is the oldest and highest town in the historic Priorat. 'La Moreira' was already known before the end of the Reconquest , when it was inhabited by Moor peasants, who built a castle in search of protection . The castle was later used by the Christians. Albert de Castellvell ruled the place until 1170, when it was given to Knight Arnau de Salfores, who founded the Bonrepòs community (the current Mas de Sant Blai). After that the place was ruled by the Crown, which donated it to the Carthusian order and from that moment on, the town was bonded to the Monastery.

La Morera did not take part in the Segadors War but, during the Francès war the French army caused many casualties and burnt down several buildings. The Spanish Civil War did not hit the village too seriously, only some buildings and religious images were burnt.

Remarkable places

-The parish church worships the Nativity. It is a well built construction, with a triple-arched portal. Its interior Corinthian style and is formed by a single nave and a small transept with lateral windows and a beautiful glass-work rose window.

-The old castle of La Morera has a Saracen origin. In 1954, its stones were used to repair the town streets. Before the 17th century the castle's basement worked as a prison.

-The Montsant Mountains and all its access routes.

Escaladei

The ruins of the first Carthusian monastery in the country are located near La Morera del Montsant and Poboleda. The monastery was founded in 1194,thanks to King Alfons the 2nd and the contribution of many kings and nobles along the centuries.

Its patrimony included many estates, buildings and livestocks. All those possessions made the Escaladei the richest monastery in Catalunya. Escaladei also played an important role in the foundation of new monasteries in Spain and Portugal. The monastery was an outstanding centre of culture, art and spirituality and hosted prestigious monks within its walls. Those monks lived in poverty and were dedicated to spiritual reading, prayer and meditation. Their bodies were buried without coffins in the cemetery of La Cartoixa. The construction of the monastery went through different periods and it is formed by two well differentiated parts. One dedicated to seclusion and isolation and the other one to celebrations and ceremonies.

In the 19th century the monastery suffered the consequences of the disentailment laws and the anticlerical movement. For those reasons the monastery was destroyed, all its patrimony disappeared and the monks were unfrocked.

The Monastery of Bonrepòs

Its founder was Arnau de la Morera. Around 1194, the Balb family ( Pere Balb and his wife Guillema) held sway over the territory and the monastery that was transformed into a female monastery. Their daughter was its first abbess. Another famous abbess was Margarida de Prades, widow of king Martí the 1st. The conditions of the monastery were getting worse and Escaladei obtained a Bull from the Pope that allowed them to rule the place. In 1452, the Cistercian order decreed its closing and sent all the nuns to Santes Creus. From that moment, it started a conflict between Escaladei and Santes Creus that ended with the parcelling of all its goods and possessions.

The Hermitage of La Mare de Déu del Montsant

In 1210, Archbishop Ramon de Rocabertí gave the place to Albert de Castellvell in order to found a Cistercian female community. The image of the Mother of God has been object of devotion for the people in the region. In 1741, the building was partly rebuilt. In 1810, the Frenchburnt it down and the place was left deserted. Towards the end of the 19th century its chapel was repaired but, the image of the Mother of God was kept in Albarca.
